Dare To Write

This six-week workshop challenges you to venture out of your comfort zone and write. The toughest barrier for both novice and veteran writers is often our own fear: our fear of honesty, of abandoning truisms; of the unknown, of not being good enough, of failure, of rejection, and, above all, fear of the blank page.

In a supportive environment, we will face our writerly anxieties in order to write, share, revise, give feedback, and inspire each other. No prior writing experience needed; just the courage to try. The focus of the workshop is personal nonfiction (memoir, essays, personal reflections), but fiction writers are welcome too. Minimum enrollment 5; maximum, 12.

Spoken Stories: True Personal Storytelling - One day workshop

A one-day oral storytelling workshop on Zoom.
Storytelling is a refreshing way for writers to break away from the loneliness of the written page and make a direct connection with an audience. To tell a good story, you don’t need to be an extrovert and don’t need to have accomplished great feats. The best stories often center on a small, meaningful moment.

Essay Revision: Online at GrubStreet

“Do not be afraid to seize whatever you have written and cut it to ribbons,” wrote E.B.White. As difficult as it is to face the blank page and write that first draft, it can be equally intimidating to confront your own writing and try to improve it. But revision does not need to be painful. You can approach it as a playful exploration of possibilities. In this course, you will try to write the first draft of your essay without inhibition or self-criticism, and then, aided by your peers’ feedback, fearlessly take that rough, messy draft and craft it into brilliance. During the course, writers have the option to produce two separate essays or submit multiple drafts of a single essay. We will discuss revision techniques, responding to feedback, and, eventually, how to submit an essay for publication.

This course is offered online through Boston’s Grubstreet, one of the nation's leading creative writing centers

Sometimes the smallest moment (or the shortest essay) holds the greatest revelation. In this online class you will write six personal essays between 500 and 1,000 words. You’ll generate a lot of material, refine your skills, explore challenges in style and voice, and take a fresh look at your life experience. We'll look at examples of published essays and discuss as a class. Each week, we will also offer each other targeted feedback to help each other identify the “heat" of our essay drafts, and how to develop them. You will come out of the course with fresh drafts of multiple essays and the insight, inspiration, and knowledge of craft to develop them into polished essays. We will read a wide range of essays from a variety of time periods.
