Judith Hertog grew up in Amsterdam and immigrated to Israel as a teenager. After some wandering around the world, she eventually ended up living in Vermont. She has lived most of her life in places where she is a foreigner. Judith can communicate in six languages but lost track of who or where she is. She writes to find out.
Judith is a writer, teacher, storyteller, and photographer.
Her writing has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Sun, Longreads, Tricycle Magazine, Hotel Amerika, the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, and many others. Her work has been selected as a “Notable Essay” in Best American Essays and as a runner-up for the 2024 Missouri Review Prize for nonfiction. She has also appeared as a storyteller on the RISK! podcast.
She has received fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center for Creative Arts, The Marble House Project, and The Watermill Center.
In 2015 Judith completed an interview/photography project portraying people in Israel, titled Views from a Real Place.
Currently, Judith is working on an essay collection about identity, conflict, and how not to lose hope.
